What's inside
The workbook has 5 tabs:
- Start Here: a short how-to, a guide to every tab, and a legend showing which cells are yours to edit.
- Holdings: one row per position, ticker, name, category, shares, and cost per share. Cost basis, current value, gain or loss, and allocation percentage all calculate themselves the moment you type in a current price.
- Allocation Summary: your holdings totaled up by category (US Stocks, International Stocks, Bonds, Cash, Crypto, Other), pulled automatically from the Holdings tab.
- Dividend Income: a simple log of dividend payments as they arrive, with a running total.
- Import Guide: where to find a downloadable positions file at several major brokerages, and exactly which three pieces of information to copy into the Holdings tab.
Every total is a real formula, not a typed-in number, so the sheet recalculates itself the moment you add a holding or update a price. Only the yellow cells are meant to be edited; everything else updates on its own.
How to use it
Start on the Import Guide tab if you're not sure where your brokerage keeps its positions export. Whatever format it comes in, you only need to copy three things into the Holdings tab: ticker, shares, and cost per share. Type in each position's current price, and the cost basis, current value, gain or loss, and allocation columns fill themselves in. Check Allocation Summary and Dividend Income any time; both update automatically as you add rows to Holdings.
This is a plain spreadsheet file, so it can't reach the internet to fetch prices on its own. Revisit it every month or so and update the current price column by hand. If you'd rather have prices update on their own, the Import Guide tab explains how to rebuild the same layout in a free Google Sheet using the GOOGLEFINANCE formula instead.
What about dividends I reinvest?
Log the payment in the Dividend Income tab either way. If you reinvest it, add the new shares it bought to your position on the Holdings tab (or as a new row, if it's a fractional-share purchase you'd rather track separately) so your share count stays accurate. To see what reinvesting adds up to over the long run instead of tracking it payment by payment, the dividend reinvestment calculator runs that projection for you.
Do I need Excel to open this?
No. It's a standard .xlsx file, so it opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, or LibreOffice Calc without any conversion.
Does this pull live stock prices automatically?
No, not as an Excel file. You type in each position's current price, and everything else recalculates. If you'd rather have live prices, the Import Guide tab shows how to rebuild the same layout in Google Sheets using the GOOGLEFINANCE formula.
Can I import a CSV file from my brokerage directly?
There's no automatic parser, since every brokerage formats its export differently. You copy three columns, ticker, shares, and cost basis, from your export into the Holdings tab. The Import Guide tab walks through where to find that export at several major brokerages.
Do you see my portfolio once I download it?
No. Downloading is a plain file transfer. There's no sign-up, no email collected, and nothing about your holdings is sent back to this site once the file is on your computer.
